A series of engineering contracts have been awarded by Sellafield to four companies to provide services, including the decommissioning of nuclear power plants.

Under the agreements, which may involve pressure vessels, consortia Astrel, Cumbria Nuclear Solutions and DEV Nuclear, along with Nuvia, will assist in efforts to speed up hazard reduction at the site by providing specialist engineering solutions.

The four-year Decommissioning Framework Agreements cover a range of services across the supply chain and will see "tried and tested", as well as new techniques used on projects.

"Sellafield Ltd is applying both existing and new innovations to overcome technical decommissioning challenges," Commercial Director for Sellafield, Keith Case, stated, adding his focus and that of parent company Nuclear Management Partners is to clean-up the site safely.

Engineering students recently worked with professional experts in the field on an innovative way of safely transferring radioactive liquid at Sellafield, applying their knowledge to real-life problems.
