Companies in the West Midlands should ensure they commit to enhancing quality, it has been claimed.

The new Project Manager for SC21 at the Manufacturing Advisory Service - West Midlands (MAS-WM), Peter Jones, has declared aerospace and defence businesses in the region should enter the scheme.

SC21 has been specifically devised for the sector in order to ensure firms in the UK are able to take advantage of the expanding market and remain competitive by promoting enhancements to supply chain management, improving quality systems and reducing costs.

Mr Jones, who has experience in areas including lean manufacturing and pressure vessels, has pointed to the opportunities offered by developments in composite materials and narrow aisle aircraft as evidence of future potential in the industry.

"We've already assisted more than 200 businesses to embrace SC21 and this is helping the West Midlands' supply chain achieve world class manufacturing performance," he declared.

The SC21 change programme is focused on improving supply chain management in the aerospace and defence industry.
