The future is nano

November 2008

ISO/TS 27687 is the first international standard for the fledgling nanotechnology industry. It gives terminologies and definitions for nanoparticles, fibres and plates to help communications between organisations developing and regulating these technologies.

Nanotechnologies are already promising significant advances in medicine, energy, materials, electronics and supply of drinking water.

Dr Peter Hatto, chair of the technical committee, said: ‘International standardisation will play a critical role in ensuring that the full potential of nanotechnology is realised and that nanotechnology is safely integrated into society.’
