Steve Denton - How to manage and prepare for the change

SD You are managing any change, there are different business models people can follow and business leaders will be experienced in managing change. The first step that they need to recognise is this is a change. One of the important things that often is recognised in any kind of change management model, the first thing you’ve got to do, is to establish some sense of urgency and recognise how important it is. Really it ought to be clear for organisations that this is a significant change and to be honest many of them will be some way down the track in terms of managing this change and anyone who isn’t someway down the track already really needs to be thinking hard about it because it could have some negatives impact for them.

The next step is really understanding what the change is and understanding how it’s going to affect you. There are quite a lot of sources of information out there to understand what’s happening and it’s really important for people to talk to their clients and understand what their clients are planning. Many public sector clients are putting information out into the public domain so that their supply chain can understand what’s happening, that’s the critical next step.

Just to reemphasise that I know a lot of people who are already some way down the track doing this, but one needs to indentify a team, a group of people who are really going to champion this effort and they need to have time and resources allocated to be able to do this. Then it’s important to prepare some kind of plan and then to move through that plan and what should it contain? I think it needs to contain some thinking about understanding and tracking what our clients are doing and what their needs are. I think it needs to contain something around how to manage knowledge effectively through this transition, how to make best use of IT tools, how to capitalise o the resources that are available. To understand where there are books and guides that may be helpful to people, to understand where there are courses and other ways to work out that early part of the learning curve which is quite steep with Eurocodes and is going to be quite challenging for some people.

I remember personally that in the early years when I was working on the Eurocodes that there were certainly times when I look back on it, I rather wish that I’d been able to go on some kind of course at the time to learn some of the things that I share with people on the courses that we run because it would have saved me an awful lot of time had that been possible. I think that those are the kind of things. Also within planning it’s going to be driven to some extent by the market, it’s going to be driven by all of our clients but I think that if it is possible then it’s useful to have some kind of managed transition.

There is going to be something of a big bang, certainly within the public sector funded projects and I think that that’s something which may not give people too much opportunity in terms of a managed transition. But I think that certainly if there is the opportunity then it’s good to get a core of people who understand the issues, get up to speed and then for that core of people to be sharing that knowledge out to the rest of the organisation.
