This European Standard, a part of the BS EN 1993 Eurocode series, deals with the design of steel structures for the accidental situation of fire exposure and is intended to be used in conjunction with BS EN 1993-1-1 and BS EN 1991-1-2. It also identifies differences from, or supplements to, normal temperature design and deals with passive methods of fire protection. It gives principles and application rules for designing structures for specified requirements in respect of the load bearing function and the levels of performance.

This European Standard applies to steel structures that are required to fulfil this load bearing function if exposed to fire, in terms of avoiding premature collapse of the structure. It also applies to structures, or parts of structures, that are within the scope of EN 1993-1 and are designed accordingly.

The methods given are applicable to structural steel grades S235, S275, S355, S420 and S460 of BS EN 10025 and all grades of BS EN 10210 and BS EN 10219.

The methods given are also applicable to cold-formed steel members and sheeting within the scope of BS EN 1993-1-3. The methods are applicable to any steel grade for which material properties at elevated temperatures are available, based on harmonized European standards.

BS EN 1993-1-2:2005 describes the principles, requirements and rules for the structural design of steel buildings exposed to fire, including the following aspects:

  • design of steel structures for accidental exposure to fire 
  • passive methods of fire protection
  • applies to steel structures that are required to fulfil this load bearing function,  avoiding premature collapse due to fire
  • gives principles and application rules for designing structures for specified requirements in respect of the load bearing function and the levels of performance.

The methods given are applicable to any steel grade for which material properties at elevated temperatures are available, based on harmonized European standards.

Supersedes DD ENV 1993-1-2:2001 which is withdrawn.
