Guide to data analysis, quality control and improvement using cusum techniques - Part 3: Cusum methods for process/quality control using measured data

Executive summary

Guidance on procedures for setting up cusum schemes for process and quality control using measured data.

This British Standard, a part of the BS 5703 series, provides procedures for setting up cumulative sum (cusum) schemes for process and quality control using measured data.

It outlines the necessary steps for setting up a cusum scheme for measured data: how to select or set the target value, how to set up the cusum stationery, and what shape and size to make the cusum mask to achieve the desired level of performance. Cusum schemes for the mean value, range and standard deviation are described as well as the types of data to be encountered.

The changes included in this standard from the previous edition are:

- presenting the text from the ordinary users’ view point rather than that of the statistician;

- incorporating modern cusum computer software routines;

- reducing the quantity of text and eliminate repetition;

- improving the diagrams;

- bringing statistical symbols into line with standard practice.

History and related standards

This British Standard supersedes BS 5703-3:1981, which is withdrawn.

This standard includes the following cross-references:

BS ISO 3534-1, BS ISO 3534-2 and BS EN ISO 9000:2000.
