What is BIP 0009:2020 about?
This is a compliance checklist, which takes the form of an interactive PDF, and which enables organizations to demonstrate that they have the necessary controls in place and implemented to meet the requirements of BS 10008-1:2020.
Who is BIP 0009:2020 for?
- Anyone operating or auditing a management system holding electronic information; especially those where the ESI might be used as evidence in the event of a dispute
- Anyone with an interest in integrated information management systems, or an interest in ensuring information authenticity and integrity
- Management, consultants and practitioners in:
- Information and record management
- Governance, risk and compliance
- Information security management
Why should you use BIP 0009:2020?
The BS 10008-1:2020 standard outlines good practice for the management and storage of ESI, including over 400 controls covering capture, classification, retention and transferring ESI between systems or across organizational and geographic boundaries. Importantly, the issues of ensuring identity is linked to specific ESI are also covered.
This BIP 0009:2020 compliance checklist is designed to be completed by organizations that want to implement the standard and have confidence in their ESI management system and practices. The completed compliance checklist can give confidence to the organization that they are following good practice throughout their ESI management system, and can also help defend the organization against challenges to the authenticity or integrity of ESI it is using as evidence.
The use of BIP 0009:2020 will also:
- Reduce the effort and cost involved in dispute resolution as the focus of the resolution process will be less concerned with the authenticity or integrity of disclosed ESI than would otherwise be the case
- Help minimize the risks involved with the long term storage of ESI
- Act as a “gap analysis” audit tool to identify controls that need to be established or enhanced.
BIP 0009:2020 contributes to SDG 15 on protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems including sustainably managing forests and halting biodiversity loss, because it supports the use of less paper.
