What is a tracked changes standard?

A tracked changes version of a Standard indicates the changes made, during the standards revision process, between the active standard and its previous version. Additions, deletions, and other formatting and/or content revisions are clearly displayed as underlined and strikethrough texts, ensuring all changes made between the two documents are quickly and easily identified. This version of the standard includes both a copy of the new standard, along with a track changes version.

Why should you use this standard?

It specifies requirements for electroplated coatings of zinc with supplementary treatments on iron or steel, including information to be supplied by the purchaser to the electroplater, and the requirements for heat treatment before and after electroplating. 

NOTE 1: This standard is not applicable to zinc coatings applied:

  • To sheet, strip or wire in the non-fabricated form
  • To close-coiled springs
  • For purposes other than protective or decorative

It does not specify requirements for the surface condition of the basis metal prior to electroplating with zinc. However, defects in the surface of the basis metal can adversely affect the appearance and performance of the coating. The coating thickness that can be applied to threaded components can be limited by dimensional requirements, including class or fit.

What’s changed since the last update?

This revised version is now more user-friendly, with updated normative references, clarifications made to the essential requirements and the removal of non-essential requirements. 

NOTE 2: Due to REACH Regulations, the use of hexavalent chromium compounds was banned in Europe from September 2017 except where specifically authorized. Alternative conversion coatings or substitutes can be used and are required to satisfy the corrosion requirements given in this document.
