What is a tracked changes standard?

A tracked changes version of a Standard indicates the changes made, during the standards revision process, between the active standard and its previous version. Additions, deletions, and other formatting and/or content revisions are clearly displayed as underlined and strikethrough texts, ensuring all changes made between the two documents are quickly and easily identified.

What is this standard about?

It deals with the safety of those engaged in the tunnelling process and of those who could be affected by it.

Who is this standard for?

Everyone involved in tunnelling projects.

Why should you use this standard?

It makes recommendations for and gives guidance on health and safety  practices in shaft sinking and tunnel construction.

It includes health and safety recommendations that are also relevant to cut-and-cover tunnelling, immersed tube tunnels and other forms of underground construction as well as to the maintenance, renovation and repair of shafts and tunnels.

NOTE: The recommendations is this standard are not intended to apply to the construction of shafts or tunnels for the purpose of mineral extraction.

What’s changed since the last update?

This British Standard replaces BS 6164:2011 , which is withdrawn. The revision takes into account the advances in technology and equipment available to the tunnelling industry as well as new techniques and the effect of changes in legislation and guidance relating to health and safety and environmental matters.
