What is this FDIS about?

This final draft international standard is about how organizations should prepare for, respond to, and recover from disruptive incidents, so that these don’t prevent the organization from achieving its objectives.

The standard does this by setting out requirements for implementing, maintaining and improving a Business Continuity Management System (BCMS), the aim of which is to make the organization more resilient.

Who is this FDIS for?

The requirements are generic and apply to all organizations, or parts of organizations, regardless of type, size and nature.  Users will typically be:

  • Senior business managers
  • The continuity, resilience, risk and change management industries
  • The quality management industry
  • Insurers

Why should you use this FDIS?

Organizations which don’t have an effective BCMS risk significant vulnerability and the resulting negative impacts on customers, employees and suppliers, as well as wider societal impacts.

This FDIS therefore gives organizations advance information about a standard which specifies requirements to implement, maintain and improve a BCMS. This protects against disruptions, reduces the likelihood of occurrence, prepares for disruptions, responds to them and helps recovery from them when they arise.

It applies to all types and sizes of organizations that:

a)       Implement, maintain, and improve a BCMS

b)      Want to ensure conformity with stated business continuity policy

c)       Need to be able to continue to deliver products and services at an acceptable predefined capacity during a disruption

d)      Want to enhance their resilience through the effective application of a BCMS

The standard can also be used to assess an organization’s ability to meet its own continuity needs and obligations.

In common with other management systems standards, it is based on the ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ model that seeks to improve an organization’s effectiveness continually through proficient planning, implementation, supervision, review and maintenance.

What’s changed since the last update?

This is the final draft standard. In November the final standard will replace the 2012 version which has undergone a technical revision. The main changes are:

  • It now conforms to ISO’s requirements for management system standards, which have evolved since 2012
  • Requirements have been clarified, with no new requirements added
  • Discipline-specific business continuity requirements are now almost entirely within section 8
  • Section 8 has been re-structured to provide clearer understanding of the key requirements
  • A number of discipline-specific business continuity terms have been modified to improve clarity and reflect current thinking
