What is a tracked changes standard?

A tracked changes version of a Standard indicates the changes made, during the standards revision process, between the active standard and its previous version. Additions, deletions, and other formatting and/or content revisions are clearly displayed as underlined and strikethrough texts, ensuring all changes made between the two documents are quickly and easily identified. This version of the standard includes both a copy of the new standard, along with a track changes version.

What is this standard about?

This is a tracked changes version of the second part of an international standard on Brinell hardness testing. This part details how to directly and indirectly verify and calibrate testing machines and also when to perform these two types of verification.

Who is this standard for?

  • Mechanical testing laboratories
  • Metals manufacturers and suppliers
  • Measuring systems and equipment manufacturers.

Why should you use this standard?

It specifies methods of direct and indirect verification of testing machines used for determining Brinell hardness in accordance with BS EN ISO 6506-1 and can be used in conjunction with that standard and BS EN ISO 6506-3.

This tracked changes version highlights where the standard has changed in comparison with the 2014 version.

Direct verification involves checking that individual machine performance parameters fall within specified limits, whereas indirect verification utilizes hardness measurements of reference blocks, calibrated in accordance with BS EN ISO 6506-3, to check the machine’s overall performance.

NOTE 1: If a testing machine is also to be used for other methods of hardness testing, it has to be verified independently for each method.

NOTE 2: This document applies to both fixed location and portable hardness testing machines. For machines that are incapable of satisfying the specified force-time profile, the direct verification of force and testing cycle can be modified by the use of Annex B.

What’s changed in this update?

The main revisions, highlighted in this tracked changes version, are:

a)Clause 3 is added

b)Table 3 on “Repeatability and error of the testing machine for other force-diameter indices” is modified
