What is a tracked changes standard?

A tracked changes version of a Standard indicates the changes made, during the standards revision process, between the active standard and its previous version. Additions, deletions, and other formatting and/or content revisions are clearly displayed as underlined and strikethrough texts, ensuring all changes made between the two documents are quickly and easily identified. This version of the standard includes both a copy of the new standard, along with a track changes version.

What is this standard about?

This is the tracked changes version of part one in a series of European standards on construction product fire classifications. This part covers classification using data from reaction to fire tests. 
Who is this standard for?It’s relevant to any market or customer with an interest in producing material or products that need to resist fire – or where its ability to resist fire needs to be known. This has become especially important following the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire.

Why should you use this standard?

It provides the reaction to fire classification procedure for all construction products, including products incorporated within building elements, with the exception of power, control and communication cables (which are covered by BS EN 13501-6). Products are considered in relation to their end use application and the standard applies to three categories, which are treated separately:

  • Construction products, excluding floorings and linear pipe thermal insulation product
  • Floorings
  • Linear pipe thermal insulation products

The classification is split into three parts: the main classification; the smoke classification; and the flaming droplet classification.

NOTE 1: If the classification based on the tests and criteria given in Tables 1 and 2 is not appropriate, more reference scenarios (representative scale tests typifying agreed hazard scenarios) can be called upon within the context of a defined procedure. This procedure is intended to be the subject of a future European Standard or Commission Decision, on the basis of an agreement between the Commission and the Member States, in consultation with CEN/CENELEC and EOTA.

NOTE 2: Test reports constitute the basis for extended application reports as explained in prEN 15725.

What’s changed in this update?

This tracked changes version highlights changes made since BS EN 13501-1:2007+A1:2009 was published. As well as editorial corrections it includes the reaction to fire classification procedure for linear pipe thermal insulation products. In addition, the definitions for fire performance, fire scenario, net heat of combustion (PCI), heat release and sustained flaming have been expanded, as have Clause 11.2 Class F and 13.2 Class FL.
