What is PAS 8850:2020 about?

As heated tobacco products (HTP) become more prevalent there will be a need for standardization and consistency in their manufacture. PAS 8850:2020 sets a baseline for the tobacco, additives, and materials used in the manufacture of heated tobacco product; conformity of electronic components to relevant safety standards; manufacturing and product traceability; heated tobacco product stability; chemical analyses of tobacco attributes; and heated tobacco product emissions and their consistency to verify the absence of combustion and to enable heated tobacco products to be differentiated from combustible tobacco products such as cigarettes.

Why should you use PAS 8850:2020?

This PAS specifies performance requirements for heated tobacco products and tobacco heating devices.

It covers tobacco, additives, and materials used in the manufacture of heated tobacco products, conformity of electronic components to relevant safety standards; manufacturing and product traceability; heated tobacco product stability; and chemical analyses of tobacco attributes.

It also covers heated tobacco product emissions and their consistency to verify the absence of combustion and to enable heated tobacco products to be differentiated from combustible tobacco products such as cigarettes.

NOTE 1: This PAS does not imply reduced risk from heated tobacco products compared to cigarette smoking, nor does it provide a method for assessing the health risks or potential reduced health risks of heated tobacco products.


NOTE 2: This PAS does not cover: non-tobacco containing e-cigarette products within the scope of PAS 54115, carbon-heated tobacco products, or other types of heated tobacco products with non-electrical heating devices, and water pipes such as shisha and nargil.


NOTE 3: This PAS maintains technological neutrality through its requirements for producers. This means that products falling into the category of heated tobacco products with tobacco heating devices as defined in PAS 8850 can conform, irrespective of their particular design or technology. In this way, it also aims to prevent restricting innovation and emerging technologies.
