What is a tracked changes standard?

A tracked changes version of a Standard indicates the changes made, during the standards revision process, between the active standard and its previous version. Additions, deletions, and other formatting and/or content revisions are clearly displayed as underlined and strikethrough texts, ensuring all changes made between the two documents are quickly and easily identified.

What is this standard about?

It gives recommendations for the safe use of cranes permanently or temporarily installed in a work environment.

Who is this standard for?
Anyone planning and carrying out lifting operations with cranes in the UK.

Why should you use this standard?

This is Part 1 of the revised BS 7121 series. It offers guidance on complying with the requirements of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. This includes:

  • Safe systems of work selection
  • Erection and dismantling
  • Maintenance
  • Inspection
  • Thorough examination
  • Operation
  • Planning and management

The standard is also used by the Health and Safety Executive and courts as an indication of good practice.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS 7121-1 was fully revised to:

  • Reflect changes introduced in other parts of BS 7121 series
  • Reflect the changes in the application of risk based planning to lifting operations

NOTE: BS 7121-1 isn’t applicable to the use of cranes for bungee jumping or similar entertainment activities and for the use of cranes as a part of a fully automated storage or production system.
