What is this Published Document about?

First published as BS 5500 in 1976, PD 5500 is the UK’s unfired pressure vessels code. It specifies how to build and maintain unfired pressure vessels made from specific materials. 

The code has a three-year publishing cycle, within which technical amendments – to keep the document accurate and user-friendly – are issued every September. 

PD 5500+A1:2019 is the first annual amendment to the 2018 edition, which is the first in a new publishing cycle. Amendment 3 due in September 2020. 

Buyers of PD 5500+A1:2019 will receive the upcoming two amendments as part of their subscription to the 2018 edition.

  • Clarifications of material requirements in clause 2.3.3 and Annex E on welded connections
  • An explanation of the basis of Annex C, Assessment of vessels subject to fatigue
  • Corrections to equations in Annex G on local loads
  • Corrections to Annex W, the worked examples annex
  • The addition of guidance on vortex shedding and a worked example in Enquiry Case 5500/127
  • The addition of a new Enquiry Case 5500/142 for cylindrical shells of varying thickness under external pressure
