What is this standard about?

This is Part 1 in a two-part series of British Standards which supplements the European concrete specifying standard. It describes the most up-to-date methods of specifying concrete and as such is an essential guide for concrete buyers in the UK.

Who is this standard for?

  • Factory production control managers and commercial technical managers working for ready mix concrete manufacturers
  • Concrete contractors and specifiers can use this information to assist designers

Why should you use this standard?

This part of BS 8500 describes ways of specifying concrete and gives specifiers guidance.

It specifies requirements for: the constituents of concrete, the properties of fresh and hardened concrete and their verification, the limitations for concrete composition, the specification of concrete, the delivery of fresh concrete, the production control procedures and the conformity criteria and evaluation of conformity.

Annex A provides guidance on the concrete quality to be specified for selected exposure classes, intended working life and nominal cover to normal reinforcement.

This part of BS 8500 complements BS EN 206. It provides UK national provisions where required or permitted by BS EN 206. It also covers materials, methods of testing and procedures that are outside the scope of BS EN 206, but within national experience.

NOTE: BS 8500 does not give guidance on stainless steel and non-metallic reinforcement. Guidance on nominal cover to reinforcement for structural and fire consideration is available in other publications, e.g. structural design codes of practice.

What’s changed since the last update?

This amendment is predominantly concerned with increasing the range of cementitious materials covered. These now include: natural pozzolana, natural calcined pozzolana or high reactivity natural calcined pozzolana as an addition, Portland‐pozzolana and pozzolanic cements, as well as a range of ternary cements which include up to 20% limestone fines.

As well, the option to use durability modelling or an equivalent durability procedure is clarified and minor editorial changes have been made, such as the change of nomenclature from N/mm2 to MPa for stress.
