What is this standard about?

This is Part 5 in a series of standards on formats for the exchange of biometric data. It covers face recognition applications requiring an exchange of face image data.

Who is this standard for?

  • All producers/suppliers of biometric data related devices and associated software
  • Users of biometric data interchange formats, in particular organizations producing or requiring the combination of 2D facial images and associated 3D shape data to enhance the facial recognition
  • Application developers, and application profile standard developers may also find it appropriate source material
  • Owners and operators of photography studios
  • Photo stores
  • Organizations producing or requiring either conventional printed photographs or digital images of faces that may be used in applications for passports, visas, or other identification documents and when those images are required to conform to the frontal image types of this part of ISO/IEC 19794
  • Designers and operators of photo booths, if those booths are required to provide face images conforming to the specifications of this standard
  • Application developers, and application profile standard developers may also find it appropriate source material

Why should you use this standard?

Face images have been used for many decades to verify identity of persons. In recent years, digital face images are used in many applications including human examination as well as computer automated face recognition. Although photographic formats have been standardized in some cases such as passport and driver licenses, a defined standard data format of digital face images allows greater interoperability among vendors.

This standard defines a biometric data block format that contains a digital record of the image of a face. It specifies how the image is to be acquired (including lighting, pose of the subject - expression, head-dress), and how it is to be converted to a digital representation, with a full specification of the digital format.

The BS ISO/IEC 19794 series of standards will be useful in access control and identification systems such as those based on smart cards or other recognition tools, and also applies to the storage of biometric identification data in corporate databases.

What’s changed since the last update?

  • BS ISO/IEC 19794-5 has been amended to include additional face image data associated with 3D shape information
  • This amendment is intended to establish a data interchange format for storing three-dimensional (3D) human face images. To achieve this, several new image types are introduced that are a combination of 2D facial images and associated 3D shape information
  • This amendment describes the necessary changes to the data interchange format regarding the capability to hold 3D information and the additional requirements for 3D data.
