Why should you use this standard?

BS EN ISO 9809-1 specifies minimum requirements for the material, design, construction and workmanship, manufacturing process, examination, and testing at manufacture of refillable quenched and tempered seamless steel gas cylinders and tubes of water capacity up to and including 450 l for compressed, liquefied and dissolved gases. This part applies to cylinders and tubes with a maximum actual tensile strength Rma of less than 1 100MPa.

It provides a specification for worldwide usage which balances design and economic efficiency against international acceptance and universal utility, and eliminates the concerns about climate, duplicate inspections and restrictions that existed because of the lack of a definitive international standards.

The standard was also written to be referenced in the UN Model Regulations.

What’s changed since the last update?

This 2019 revision reflects industry experience since the publication of the 2010 standard. The principal changes are:

a)      Water capacity extended from below 0,5 l and up to and including 450 l

b)     Batch size for tubes now introduced

c)      Bend test retained only for prototype tests

d)     Test requirements for check analysis (tolerances modified)

e)     New test requirements for threads introduced, including an informative Annex G

f)       Original European Annexes now incorporated into the body of this document

g)      Annex A "Manufacturing imperfections" now aligned with ISO/TR 16115
