 It lays down a method for specifying decorative and protective anodic oxidation coatings on aluminium, including aluminium-based alloys, ensuring international consistency in the selection and use of methods to evaluate quality.  

NOTE 1: This standard is only relevant to decorative and protective anodizing which is mainly architectural (both indoor and outdoor) but can include many automotive applications such as roof bars and hub caps, kitchen appliances and surfaces, housings for electrical products, lighting reflectors etc.  It is not considered to be relevant to hard anodizing (see: ISO 10074), and aerospace and defence industry applications.

  • Lays down a method for specifying decorative and protective anodic oxidation coatings on aluminium including aluminium-based alloys
  • Defines the characteristic properties of anodic oxidation coatings
  • Lists methods of test for checking the characteristic properties
  • Provides minimum performance requirements
  • Gives information on the grades of aluminium suitable for anodizing and on the importance of pre-treatment to ensure the required appearance or texture of the finished work

NOTE 2: It is not applicable to:

  1. Non-porous anodic oxidation coatings of the barrier layer type
  2. Anodic oxidation coatings produced by chromic acid or phosphoric acid anodizing
  3. Anodic oxidation coatings intended merely to prepare the substrate for subsequent application of organic coatings or for the electrodeposition of metals
  4. Hard anodic oxidation coatings used mainly for engineering purposes, for which abrasion and wear resistance are the primary characteristics (see ISO 10074)

  • Certain terms and definitions have been deleted
  • Annex D on a method of calibrating eddy current apparatus for measuring coating thickness has been extensively revised and clarified
  • Sealing methods other than hydrothermal and cold, nickel-fluoride based sealing are now allowed, recognizing trends in the industry
  • The test methods for sealing quality have been differentiated based on what they actually measure
  • The informative test methods for abrasion resistance have been differentiated based on whether they measure abrasive or erosive wear
