PAS 8811:2017

Temporary works. Major infrastructure client procedures. Code of practice

Status : Current   Published : January 2017

What is this PAS about?

This PAS gives recommendations on major infrastructure client procedures for temporary works and temporary conditions of permanent works. It aims to establish a unified approach during the construction process.

NOTE: Procedural controls for temporary works are widely used and are covered in BS 5975:2008+A1:2011, Section 2. However, no guidance has existed on procedures for temporary works that is aimed explicitly at major infrastructure clients. PAS 8811 was written to fill that gap and is one of two sponsored by HS2 and The Temporary Works Forum.

Who is the PAS for?

  • Major infrastructure clients commissioning temporary works
  • Construction/engineering industry
  • Procurers
  • Rail industry
  • Traffic control/local authorities
  • Health and safety/quality/compliance managers

Why should you use this standard?

The aim is to establish a unified approach to major infrastructure client involvement in temporary works across all stages (e.g. defining requirements, procurement, installation, use and removal of temporary works structures). PAS 8811 also aims to eliminate unnecessary procedures and conflicts to achieve clarity and minimize delays during the compliance and approvals process and other necessary procedures.

It does not cover the contractual responsibilities of major infrastructure clients, suppliers or contractors. Where there are relevant existing standards or industry documents, this PAS refers to these. It is not the intention of this PAS to replicate existing material.

The PAS supports the principle of making it clear at which points it is good practice for the major infrastructure client to actively stipulate procedures and/or processes in temporary works and/or the design of temporary works.

NOTE: This PAS is one of two sponsored by HS2 and the Temporary Works Forum and can be used in conjunction with PAS 8812 Temporary works – Application of European Standards in design – Guide, which gives guidance on the application of European standards in the design of temporary works in the UK for practitioners in the fields of structural and geotechnical temporary works design.

NOTE: This PAS complements, and is intended to be used in conjunction with, BS 5975 Code of practice for temporary works procedures and the permissible stress design of falsework expanding areas where there is limited information provided for major infrastructure client requirements.
