What is this standard about?

This latest technical revision gives the most up-to-date guidelines for maritime navigation and radio communications equipment and systems relating to AIS base stations.

Who is this standard for?

  • Manufacturers and operators of AIS base station equipment
  • Suppliers of maritime communication systems and navigation equipment
  • Ship builders and operators
  • The marine/maritime industries

Why should you use this standard?

Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) equipment has to be carried on shipping vessels built after 2002. Data is transmitted via base stations, helping to provide information on a ship’s identity type, position, course, speed, navigational status and other safety related information.

BS EN 62320-1:2015 outlines the very latest operational and performance requirements and testing specifications for these AIS Base Stations. It does not include specifications for the display of AIS data on shore.

What’s changed since the last update?

  • This revised standard incorporates the technical characteristics included in Recommendation ITU R M.1371 5
  • It incorporates the technical characteristics of non-shipborne, fixed station AIS equipment included in IALA Recommendation A-124
  • It takes into account the ITU radio regulations where applicable
  • Amendments have been made to transmitter intermodulation attenuation and TAG blocks
