What is this standard about?

It supplies recommendations for the design of earth retaining structures. Specifically it provides designers with the guidance they need to implement the requirements of Eurocode 7 with regards to gravity, semi-gravity and embedded retaining walls. 

The standard also gives further details on how retaining structures should be designed according to limit state principles and provides information missing from Eurocode 7 but of importance to UK practice. At the same time, advances in retaining wall technology over the past 20 years are reflected in the fully revised text.

What’s changed since the last update?

This is a full revision and complete restructuring of the British Standard Code of Practice for Foundations, BS 8002: 1994.

It modernizes the code of practice, so that it’s based on the limit state principles set out in Eurocode 7. 

Developments in earth retaining structures are reflected in the updated text, and guidance is given in relation to soil stiffness to enable serviceability limit states to be verified.
