What is this standard about?

This is one in a series of standards dealing with the installation of wall and floor tiling. Part 4 applies to the quality of workmanship and design of floor tile installations. It gives recommendations on design considerations and on the installation of ceramic wall and floor tiling, and mosaics in situations where there are specific environmental or functional requirements, e.g. sterile conditions, wet areas, and conditions that are potentially detrimental to either or both the installation or the background, e.g. chemical attack.

Who is this standard for?

  • Architects
  • Designers
  • Contractors and specialist sub-contractors
  • Tile manufacturers and retailers

Why should you use this standard?

Because it gives recommendations on the choice of materials, application practices and, where appropriate, on the design of backgrounds and structural bases.

This part of BS 5385 expands the recommendations given in BS 5385-1, BS 5385-2 and BS 5385-3. Using this standard will lead to a reduction in the number of failed installations and give greater clarity to failed installation inspection reports.

What’s changed since the last update?

This standard was revised to make sure it meets the needs of the current market and that it aligns with Parts 1, 2 and 3.

It updates some subject matter and makes sure that the overall structure of the series continues to meet market needs.

In particular it tackles, and is expected to reduce, the increased incidence of installation failures on heated screeds and calcium sulfate screeds.
