What is BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑4 - Electromagnetic compatibility about?

BS EN IEC 6100064 is the fourth part of an international standard that focuses on emission standards for industrial environments.

BS EN IEC 6100064 applies to electrical and electronic equipment intended for use within the environment existing at industrial locations. This generic EMC emission standard is to be used where no applicable product or product family EMC emission standard is available.

It covers emission requirements in the frequency range of 9 kHz to 400 GHz and has been selected to provide an adequate level of protection of radio reception in the defined electromagnetic environment.

Note 1: BS EN IEC 6100064 does not apply to equipment that falls within the scope of IEC 61000-6-3.

Note 2: The environments encompassed by BS EN IEC 6100064 cover both indoor and outdoor locations.

Note 3: Safety considerations are not covered by BS EN IEC 6100064

Who is BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑4 - Electromagnetic compatibility for?

BS EN IEC 6100064 on electromagnetic compatibility is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of electromagnetic compatibility testing kit
  • Dealers and distributors of electromagnetic compatibility testing kit
  • Designers of electromagnetic compatibility testing kit
  • Test providers for electromagnetic compatibility testing kit

Why should you use BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑4 - Electromagnetic compatibility

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing helps to evaluate the ability of equipment or systems to perform all functions appropriately in their electromagnetic environment, without indulging intolerable electromagnetic disturbance in that environment.

BS EN IEC 6100064 gives you technical specifications for electromagnetic compatibility testing for various electrical measuring devices. These requirements are considered essential to provide an adequate level of protection to radio services.

BS EN IEC 6100064 gives you options for testing particular requirements of electromagnetic compatibility with a choice of test methods, that are in compliance with the global standards. It states that, equipment that fulfils the requirements across the frequency ranges specified in BS EN IEC 6100064, is deemed to fulfil the requirements in the entire frequency range from 9 kHz to 400 GHz.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN IEC 6100064:2019 supersedes BS EN 6100064:2007+A1:2011, which will be withdrawn.

BS EN IEC 6100064:2019 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

  • Possible future requirements on DC ports
  • Possible future radiated polarity specific emission limits within a FAR
  • The definition of which average detector is used for emission measurements at frequencies above 1GHz and that results using a peak detector are acceptable for all measurements
  • The definition of different EUT test arrangements
