What is this PAS about?

Many biocide products, such as liquid disinfectants, claim to have so called residual efficacy: that is they claim to be “long-lasting”, or to offer “24-hour protection”, etc.

The usual test is to apply the product to a hard surface and leave it there for a defined period of time. However because the surface is undisturbed following application, such a test may not reflect reality.

This PAS by contrast provides a test that more closely duplicates how these products are used in the real world.

Who is this PAS for?

  • Laboratories that perform antimicrobial testing on liquid chemical disinfectants
  • Institutions such as schools, hospitals and nursing homes using liquid chemical disinfectants
  • Other interested workplaces using liquid chemical disinfectants
  • Consumers using liquid chemical disinfectants in the home

Why should you use this PAS?

It specifies a test method for the residual bactericidal and/or yeasticidal activity of liquid chemical disinfectant products that are applied to hard, non-porous surfaces likely to undergo abrasive action. The test remains as close as possible to the practical conditions in which the product is designed to be used by taking into consideration both abrasion and spillage.

The method described is intended to determine the activity of commercial formulations or active substances under the conditions in which they are used in accordance with BS EN 13697:2001.

It thereby provides a rigorous and credible test that enables residual antimicrobial activity to be independently measured and assessed in a way that’s more relevant to how these products are used outside the laboratory.
