What is this standard about?

Iron- and steel-based structures are protected from corrosion by protective coatings. A number of different procedures are available to do this. The ISO 2063 series applies to thermal-sprayed metallic coatings of zinc, aluminium or their alloys. 

This part of the standard, Part 1, is for component designers. It covers the planning engineering of the corrosion protection system and deals with the basic rules for planning corrosion protection systems and the constructive design of the component to be protected.

Why should you use this standard?

It specifies requirements for the corrosion protection of iron and steel surfaces by applying thermal-sprayed metallic coatings of zinc, aluminium or their alloys.

It covers applying thermal-sprayed zinc and aluminium protection coatings against corrosion in the temperature range between –50 °C to +200 °C, taking into consideration the service conditions of any sealants used.

It includes:  

  • Requirements for the planning of the corrosion protection system and for the constructive design of the component to be protected, where thermal spraying is intended to be the process for the deposition of the metallic corrosion protection
  • Definitions for some field-related basic terms
  • Instructions for corrosion behaviour of the zinc and aluminium materials under different environment conditions
  • Characteristic properties of the coating, e.g. coating thickness, minimum adhesive strength and surface appearance
  • Test procedures for thermal-sprayed corrosion protection coatings of zinc, aluminium or their alloys

NOTE: Heat-resistant protective coatings of aluminium are covered by ISO 17834 and are not in the scope of this document. Nor are other corrosion protection processes, e.g. hot-dip galvanizing (galvanic coating), sherardizing, electroplating or selection and deposition of organic coatings/paints.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 2063:2005 has been split into two parts. This has created the opportunity to add elements that had been in ISO 14713 but were taken out of that standard when it was revised in 2009, specifically: reference to aluminium coatings; recommended design considerations for thermal spraying; and spray process related instructions. 

Part 1 of BS EN ISO 2063 now addresses design and planning engineering while Part 2 is targeted at manufacturers and specifies the necessary requirements for adequate and safe manufacture.
