What is this PAS about?
There’s a need to promote underpinning knowledge and frameworks that ensure swimming schools comply with industry requirements and at the same time promote progressive learn-to-swim programmes with the best possible teaching standards. This PAS aims to support these needs.
Who is this PAS for?
It’s for use by swimming schools (organizations or individuals) that operate in a public or private swimming pool on a voluntary or commercial basis. It’s not applicable to scuba diving and snorkelling activities.
Why should you use this PAS?
PAS 81 specifies requirements for the management of swimming schools. It exists to increase safety in the interest of both customers and the market sector as a whole, and to disseminate good practice.
The sector complies with the requirements of a wide range of safety legislation and standards and historically the best way of meeting such requirements has been to participate in a number of quality accreditation schemes and codes of practice.
However, the proliferation of organizations providing swimming classes has made it increasingly difficult, if not impossible, for swimming schools to comply with all the current available schemes.
By meeting the requirements of PAS 81, a swimming school is able to provide assurance to the industry and its customers of its competence via a single recognized specification.
What’s changed since the last update?
This PAS is a full revision of the 2008 version which it replaces.
