Escalators and moving walks. Code of practice for safe working on escalators and moving walks

Status : Confirmed, Current   Published : May 2011

What is this standard about?

It gives recommendations for safe working practices around escalators and moving walks.

Who is this standard for?

  • Owners of permanently installed and commissioned escalators and moving walks
  • Persons having effective control of the premises (duty holder) on which such escalators and moving walks are installed
  • Persons responsible for, and involved in, the examination, inspection testing, service, maintenance, repair and dismantling of such escalators and moving walks

Why should you use this standard?

It supplies recommendations that relate to people’s safety when gaining access to and from escalator and moving walk work areas, and while working there.

They also relate to the safety of others present in the vicinity, whether they are working or not, who could be endangered by the actions of those working on escalators and moving walks.

NOTE: This standard applies to people working on all types of escalators and moving walks. However, not every recommendation applies to all types of escalator and moving walk covered by British Standards either published or in preparation.

What’s changed since the last update?

This is a full revision of the 2004 edition of this standard, which it replaces. Changes were made to accommodate:
