What is this standard about?

This part of BS 8486 focuses on the examination and performance testing of new lifts before they are put into service. These include service lifts, passenger lifts, goods lifts and other electronically operated devices.

Who is this standard for?

  • Lift engineers
  • Manufactures of electrical lifts
  • Anyone responsible for the installation and maintenance of lifts
  • Health and safety officers
  • Fire safety officers

Why should you use this standard?

BS 8486 looks at all the factors that should be taken into account when examining new lifts and their components. Part 1 sets out the minimum requirements for the inspection, electrical testing and recording of relevant results to ensure maximum safety. The standard gives best-practice recommendations relating to performance testing, and to the commissioning, maintenance and installation of electrical lifts.  It also provides up-to-date information on remote alarms, accessibility, anti-vandalism measures and fire safety in lifts.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS 8486-1 has been fully revised by experts. The 2011 Amendment brings it up to date with technological developments and industry best practice.
