BS EN 10217-7:2014 Welded steel tubes for pressure purposes. Technical delivery conditions. Stainless steel tubes

Overview
This European Standard is one of a series developed for welded steel tubes for pressure purposes. The 2014 version updates the version first published in 2005, which replaced BS 3605 Part 2. It is a companion standard to BS EN 10216-5:2013 which covers similar seamless products.

Who is the standard for?
The standard has been written for manufacturers, designers, engineers, quality managers and others working in areas that involve high pressure, abrasive conditions, both high and low temperatures or acidic or caustic environments. These will typically be in the following industries:

  • petrochemicals/chemicals
  • energy
  • pulp and paper
  • water treatment and desalination
  • food processing
  • pharmaceutical production
  • oil and gas
  • conveyance and processing of liquids, gases and semi-solids in solution

Welded tubular products are frequently used in LNG plants, terminals and tankers; GTL plants, regasification and for storage. Other oil and gas applications would include in refineries and methanol, ammonia, ethylene, propylene and urea plants.

What does the standard cover?
BS EN 10217-7:2014 covers welded stainless steel tubes used for circular cross-sections made of austenitic and austenitic-ferritic stainless steel. These will be for use in pressurised systems requiring corrosion resistance at either room temperature, low temperatures or elevated temperatures.

Note that the standard applies to steel tubes that convey fluids under pressure when the corrosive nature of the fluid or the pressure or temperature involved requires stainless steel to be used, either to provide better corrosion resistance, or mechanical properties better than those provided by a carbon manganese or low allow steel.

The standard details the classification and designation of steel grades, the manufacturing process, general requirements, inspection, sampling, test methods, marking, handling and packaging of welded tubes.

How does EN BS 10217-7:2014 differ from the 2005 version?
The standard was updated as part of a regular review process. The following changes have been made:
- it updates standards references
- it includes minor editorial corrections
- it adds permitted use of digital (real time) x-rays in addition to film-based x-ray process for NDT testing of the weld line.
