Eurocode 4. Design of composite steel and concrete structures. General rules and rules for buildings

Status : Current   Published : February 2005

BS EN 1994-1-1:2004 describes the principles and requirements for safety, serviceability and durability of composite steel and concrete structures, together with specific provisions for buildings. It is based on the limit state concept used in conjunction with a partial factor method.

For the design of new structures, BS EN 1994-1-1 is intended to be used, for direct application, together with other parts of BS EN 1994, Eurocodes BS EN 1990 to 1993 and Eurocodes BS EN 1997 and 1998.

BS EN 1994-1-1 also serves as a reference document for other CEN TCs concerning structural matters.

BS EN 1994-1-1 is intended for use by:

  • committees drafting other standards for structural design and related product, testing and
    execution standards
  • clients (e.g. for the formulation of their specific requirements on reliability levels and durability)
  • designers and constructors
  • relevant authorities.

  • General
  • Basis of design
  • Materials
  • Durability
  • Structural analysis
  • Ultimate limit states
  • Serviceability limit states
  • Composite joints in frames for buildings
  • Composite slabs with profiled steel sheeting for buildings
  • Annex A (informative) - Stiffness of joint components in buildings
  • Annex B (informative) - Standard tests
  • Annex C (informative) - Shrinkage of concrete for composite structures for buildings
  • Bibliography

This standard supersedes DD ENV 1994-1-1:1994.

NotesFollowing publication of the EN, there is a period of 2 years allowed for the national calibration period during which the National Annex is issued, followed by a three year coexistence period. During the coexistence period Member States will be encouraged to adapt their national provisions to withdraw conflicting national rules before the end of the coexistence period. The Commission in consultation with Member States is expected to agree the end of the coexistence period for each package of Eurocodes. At the end of this coexistence period BS 5950-3.1:1990 & BS 5950-4:1994 will be withdrawn.
