What is this standard about?

This international specification provides minimum design standards to meet the needs of the majority of disabled people, and therefore has not been adopted by the UK as a British Standard.

Higher levels of recommendations and guidance for the provision of access to and means of escape from buildings for disabled people exists in the UK in the form of: BS 8300:2009+A1:2010 Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people. Code of practice; and BS 9999:2017 Code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use.

Why should you use this standard?

ISO 21542:2011 specifies a range of requirements and recommendations for many of the elements of construction, assemblies, components and fittings which comprise the built environment. These requirements relate to the constructional aspects of access to buildings, to circulation within buildings, to egress from buildings in the normal course of events and evacuation in the event of an emergency. It also deals with aspects of accessibility management in buildings.
