PD 6689 gives guidance on the use of BS EN 12271 in the UK. BS EN 12271 specifies the properties of surface dressing required for the surface treatment of roads and other trafficked areas.  BS EN 12271 is expected to be published in March 2007.

PD 6689 gives guidance on the performance requirements and control procedures for the installation of surface dressing as a product for the surface dressing as a product for the surface treatment of roads and other trafficked areas and covers the following aspects:

  • Overview of BS EN 12271
  • Requirements of BS EN 12271 
  • Factory production control 
  • Type approval installation trial (TAIT)

  • Traffic categories 
  • Categories of binder and chipping application 
  • Categories for defects determined by visual assessment

PD 6689 does not apply to the following areas:

  • surface dressings designed by the purchaser 
  • surface dressings in tunnels where fire tunnel regulations apply 
  • small areas under 50 m² which are not contiguous, such as patch repair surface dressing 
  • airfield pavements covered by international regulations - e.g. ICAO regulations.

BS EN 12271 is expected to be published in March 2007.
