PD ISO/TR 9464 is a  technical report to help oil and gas sector measure flowrate in pipelines.

PD ISO/TR 9464 answers some of important questions which might arise as a result of the application BS EN ISO 5167 series, in the measurement of flow rates in pipelines.

The report will benefit the oil and gas sectors as it presents guidance on applying the rules and requirements of ISO 5167 based on theory and experimental work undertaken in the field of flow measurement.

PD ISO/TE 9464 will help petroleum and gas shippers and producing, exporting and importing nations to get the best from ISO 5167:2003. The report provides guidance on the use of all parts of ISO 5167:2003. PD ISO/TR 9464 also gives supporting information for calculating the flowrate and its associated uncertainty measurement.  Also PD ISO/TR 9464 gives information on the use of secondary instrumentation, including measurement of pressure, differential pressure, temperature, density and electrical supply.

ISO 5167:2003 is an international standard (in four parts) for flow measurement based on the differential pressure generated by a constriction introduced into a circular conduit.

It covers the geometry and method of use (installation and operating conditions) of orifice plates, nozzles and Venturi tubes when they are inserted in a conduit running full to determine the flowrate of the fluid flowing in the conduit. It also gives necessary information for calculating the flowrate and its associated uncertainty.

It presents a set of rules and requirements based on theory and experimental work undertaken in the field of flow measurement.

Some clauses of ISO 5167:2003 (parts 1 to 4) are not commented upon and the corresponding clause numbers are omitted from this Technical Report, except when it has been thought to be useful to keep a continuous numbering of paragraphs.

ISO/TR 9464 answers some important questions which might arise on the use of ISO 5167, for example, on calculating upstream from downstream temperature. With the application of the rules it provides, it is practicable to achieve flow measurement within an uncertainty of approximately 1 % of the calculated flowrate.

The report gives supplementary guidance on the use of all parts of ISO 5167 and information on the use of essential secondary instrumentation, including measurement of pressure, differential pressure, temperature, density and electrical supply.

Definitions and symbols applicable to this Technical Report are given in BS EN ISO 5167-1:2003.

Neither BS EN ISO 5167-1:2003 nor this Technical Report give detailed theoretical background, for which reference should be made to any general textbook on fluid flow.

With the application of the rules and requirements set out in BS EN ISO 5167-1:2003, it is practicable to achieve flow measurement within an uncertainty of approximately 1 % of the calculated flowrate. The constraints applicable to each of the primary devices described in ISO 5167:2003 (parts 2 to 4) need to be given consideration before determining the most suitable type for a particular application. Parts 2 to 4 can also be used to form the basis for preliminary design of a metering system.

The information necessary for detailed design, manufacture and final check is specified in the clauses and paragraphs of ISO 5167:2003 (parts 2 to 4).

PD ISO/TR 9464:2008 replaces BS ISO/TR 9464:1998 which has been withdrawn.
