Abstract
This British Standard, a part of the BS 5655 series, provides recommendations for the modernization, or modification, and improvement of hydraulic passenger and goods passenger lifts, serving defined landing levels, having a car designed for the transportation of persons or persons and goods, suspended by jacks, ropes or chains and moving between guide rails inclined not more than 15o to the vertical.
Recommendations are given on upgrading the safety of existing lifts, risk assessments, tests and records of important modifications.
Recommendations and guidance on the modification of existing lifts include changes to rated load, travel, mass of the empty car, mass of jack or mass of suspension means. Guidance is also given on changes to the complete controller, the drive controller and the traffic controller.

This British Standard supersedes BS 5655-12:1989, which is withdrawn.
