This European Standard, a part of the BS EN 485 series, specifies the mechanical properties of wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy sheet, strip and plate for general engineering applications. It applies to flat rolled products.

This standard does not apply to semi-finished rolled products in coiled form to be subjected to further rolling (reroll stock) or to special products such as corrugated, embossed, painted, etc. sheets and strips or to special applications such as aerospace, can stock, finstock, etc. which are dealt with in separate European Standards.

The systems for designating these materials are described in BS EN 573-1 and BS EN 573-2. Their chemical composition limits are specified in BS EN 573-3.

Mechanical property limits are specified for all Class A alloys, as defined in BS EN 573-4.

Temper designations are defined in BS EN 515.

BS EN 485-2:2004 contains useful information on the following:

  • Tensile test
  • Hardness test
  • Stress-corrosion resistance
  • Bend test
  • Electrical conductivity
  • Exfoliation corrosion resistance

Important reference documents that relate to BS EN 485-2:2004 include parts one to four of the BS EN 573 series entitled Aluminium and aluminium alloys. Chemical composition and form of wrought products and BS EN 515 Aluminium and aluminium alloys. Wrought products. Temper designations.

Details include:

  • The systems for designating wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys are described in BS EN 573-1 Numerical designation system and BS EN 573-2 Chemical symbol-based designation system
  • Their chemical composition limits are given in BS EN 573-3 Chemical composition
  • Mechanical property limits are specified in BS EN 573-4:2004
  • Temper designations are designed in BS EN 515.

BS EN 485-2:2004 supersedes BS EN 485-2:1995, which is now withdrawn.
