What is BS 8004:2015+A1:2020 about?

This is an important design standard for geotechnical and structural engineers, setting out the fundamental rules that should be followed in the design of both shallow and deep foundations. As such BS 8004:2015+A1:2020 applies to a wide variety of projects, ranging from low-rise buildings to large, multi-storey structures.

It gives recommendations for the design, construction, testing, monitoring and maintenance of foundations in accordance with BS EN 1997. The foundation types covered include spread foundations, pile foundations (including helical pile foundations) and underpinning.

What’s new about BS 8004:2015+A1:2020?

The standard was fully revised in 2015. Now BS 8004:2015+A1:2020 includes an amendment which:

a)       Modifies equation 45 and symbols for expressions (60) and (61)

b)      Includes a note regarding guidance on the calculation of unit shaft friction in rocks

c)       Includes guidance on micropiles
