What is this standard about?

Toxic, asphyxiating or explosive gases can leak from the ground and accumulate in buildings, posing health risks. This standard describes how to characterize sites and prevent the entry of carbon dioxide and methane into new buildings.

This amended edition of the standard clarifies the gas protection scoring methods and the criteria for gas resistant membranes.

Other industry guidance exists but none provides the same clarity on remedial solution selection.

Who is this standard for?

  • Consultants who use the standard to classify sites and design gas protection measures
  • Regulators (environmental health officers and building control) who assess proposed measures
  • Local authorities (planning and building control)
  • Membrane manufacturers and suppliers
  • Contractors installing gas protective measures
  • Builders, developers, architects and engineers
  • Geotechnical and environmental engineers
  • Construction risk assessors
  • Site investigators

Why should you use this standard?

It provides:

  • Recommendations on ground gas site characterization and the choice of solutions for the design of integral gas protective measures for new buildings to prevent the entry of carbon dioxide and methane, and provide a safe internal environment.
  • Recommendations and criteria with regards to those membranes that can be used as a gas resistant membrane.
  • A process that can be used to demonstrate that a risk posed by the potential or actual presence of carbon dioxide and methane has been addressed.

NOTE: This standard provides compliance with the requirements of Building Regulations, Approved Document C: Site preparation and resistance to contaminants and moisture.
