What is this standard about?

This new British Standard supplies UK construction requirements for HBM used in pavement layers.

Note that HBM is used in the standard as a generic term covering a wide range of mixtures of aggregates or soil, hydraulic binders and water, including roller compacted concrete (RCC), hydraulically bound granular material (HBGM) and hydraulically stabilized soils (HSS), which are available for use in construction and maintaining roads and other paved areas.

The standard was written to complement the European standard which specifies HBM (BS EN 14227) and includes UK-specific content not found elsewhere. It is envisaged that BS 9227 will be used on all UK pavement schemes which incorporate HBM in future.

Who is this standard for?

  • Local authorities
  • Government departments
  • Test houses
  • Consultancies
  • Contractors
  • For reference by higher education establishments

Why should you use this standard?

It specifies requirements for the production, installation, testing and conformity of HBM conforming to BS EN 14227, whether constructed by the ex-situ or in-situ method of production.

It also includes requirements for preliminary work at the laying site necessary to ensure the substrate is fit to receive the HBM and supports the appropriate investigation, specification and application of these materials in pavement applications on roads, ports, airfields and heavy industrial areas.

NOTE 1: This British Standard does not include a framework for investigating and assessing in-situ soils or recycling existing pavements to produce HBM.

NOTE 2: This British Standard relates to HBM for use in pavement layers, including the pavement foundation. Applications related to earthworks or other uses of HBM are not covered.
