BS EN 13445-3:2014+A4:2018 Unfired pressure vessels – Part 3: Design

BS EN 13445-3:2014+A4:2018

Unfired pressure vessels. Design

Status : Work in hand, Current   Published : September 2014

What is this standard about?

This is Part 3 in the series of European standards specifying requirements for the design, construction, inspection and testing of unfired pressure vessels made from steels and steel castings as well as additional materials such as cast iron, aluminium and nickel.

The series applies to unfired pressure vessels with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar gauge, but may be used for vessels operating at lower pressures, including vacuum.

These standards are invaluable to those who want to demonstrate compliance with the European Pressure Equipment Directive (the PED).

This third part deals with the design of unfired pressure vessels.

Who is this standard for?

Organizations who commission, design, build and maintain pressure vessels. This includes:

  • Mechanical engineers
  • Pressure vessels designers, and
  • Manufacturers and inspectors in:
    • Oil and gas
    • Petrochemicals
    • Process plant
    • Energy generation (including nuclear)

Why should you use this standard?

It specifies requirements for the design of unfired pressure vessels covered by BS EN 13445-1 and constructed of steels in accordance with BS EN 13445-2.

BS EN 13445-5, Annex C, specifies requirements for the design of access and inspection openings, closing mechanisms and special locking elements.

NOTE: Part 3 applies to design of vessels before putting into service. It may be used for in service calculation or analysis subject to appropriate adjustment.

What’s changed since the last update?

  • Annual updates have been made as part of the regular updating process in order to ensure the accuracy and usability of the series
  • Specifically, this amendment (A4:2018) introduces general editorial updates and improvements as well as minor changes to sub-clause on “Openings in elliptical and torispherical ends”
