For the first time at international level, this standard deals with basic requirements and protection concepts for non-electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres.

Why should you use this standard? 

It specifies the basic method and requirements for design, construction, testing and marking of non-electrical Ex equipment, Ex Components, protective systems, devices, and assemblies of these products that have their own potential ignition sources and are intended for use in explosive atmospheres.

It addresses mechanical equipment and assemblies intended for the generation, transfer, storage, measurement, control and conversion of energy and/or the processing of materials which are capable of causing an explosion through their own potential sources of ignition. 

The standard’s requirements include equipment protection levels (EPLs) groups I, II and III, and cover a wide range of equipment including brakes, couplings, pumps, gearboxes, hydraulics, fans and compressors.

NOTE: This standard supplies a means of conforming to essential requirements of 2014/34/EU.

What’s changed since the last update?

This standard supersedes BS EN 13463-1:2009. Significant changes are detailed in Annex ZC, and include:

The introduction of:

  • New definitions and redefinitionso Equipment Protection Level
  • Dust groups
  • Instructions for safe use and required maintenance
  • A note on the risk of ignition from another ignition source 
  • A note on the option to calculate maximum temperatures
  • A note on the layers of coal dust
  • A note on instructions
  • A column on requirement for T5 classification 
  • Two notes on the enclosed volume
  • Requirement regarding external hot surfaces
