What is this standard about?

This standard is about how flat steel sheet and plate should be produced for the construction of safe pressure equipment. This part specifies general technical delivery conditions for flat products for pressure purposes made of stainless steels, including austenitic creep resisting steels.

Who is this standard for?

-          Design engineers

-          Importers/steel stockists

-          Purchasing staff

-          Quality engineers

-          Quality managers

Why should you use this standard?

It supports essential requirements of EU Directive 2014/68/EU for pressure equipment (PED) – see Note 1 below.

What’s changed since the last update?

The main changes since the 2007 version and the 2009 amendment are:

1)      Normative references revised

2)      New definition for “normalizing” added

3)      Notes under other definitions partially revised

4)      New table concerning the correlation between product form and the standard for tolerances on dimension and shape added in chapter 4

5)      Marking of text passages with one or two dots has been generally deleted

6)      The extent of testing for tensile test at room temperature (mandatory) and perpendicular to product (optional) in Table 2 revised

7)      Cross references in Table 2 updated

8)      New optional test concerning the evaluation of resistance to hydrogen induced cracking

9)      Cross references are generally updated

10)   Statements in 9.1.1 concerning inspection documents updated

11)   Statements in 10.2.2 concerning preparation of test pieces updated

12)   New statement concerning using of circular test pieces for tensile test in footnote a) of Table 4 and 10.2.2.2 c)

13)   In 10.2.2.3 the third option for the width of the test pieces in thicknesses between 6 mm and 12 mm for impact testing has been deleted

14)   In Tables 4 and 5 the lower limit for the thickness of test pieces for impact testing has been changed from “11 mm” to “12 mm” and the corresponding data have been updated

15)   Correlation in Annex ZA between the clause of this European standard and the essential requirements of the Directive 2014/68/EU updated

NOTE 1: Once this European Standard is published in the EU Official Journal (OJEU) under Directive 2014/68/EU, presumption of conformity to the Essential Safety Requirements (ESRs) of Directive 2014/68/EU is limited to technical data of materials in this European Standard (Part 1 and the other relevant part of the series) and does not presume adequacy of the material to a specific item of equipment. Consequently, the technical data stated in this material standard must be assessed against the design requirements of this specific item of equipment to verify that the Essential Safety Requirements of Directive 2014/68/14 are satisfied.
