What is this standard about?

It is part of a revised British Standard which lays out safety rules for the construction and installation of escalators and passenger conveyors. Part 1 includes specifications and pro formas for the testing and examination of new installations, prior to them being placed in service.

Who is this standard for?

  • Escalator manufacturers
  • Escalator installers
  • Escalator service staff
  • Escalator consultants
  • Building services engineers
  • Building owners and managers

Why should you use this standard?

International Machinery Directives require that manufacturers of escalators/moving walkways ensure testing of their products before placing them into service or after any major modifications - clearly there is a risk of harm to users if either are installed or manufactured incorrectly.

BS 5656-1 describes the procedures required to test escalators prior to being placed into service or when any major modifications have been carried out. The main design standard for escalators BS EN 115-1:2008+A1:2010 Safety of escalators and moving walks. Construction and installation has been revised to include new technical provisions – and BS 5656-1 now meet these needs.

What’s changed since the last update?

Together with BS 5656-3, this part of BS 5656 supersedes the previous standard and has been updated in line with the latest technical developments and industry best practice.

BS 5656-1 is intended to be read in conjunction with BS EN 115-1:2008+A1:2010.

BS 5656 is now published in three parts:
