Why should you use this standard?

BS EN 1999-1-1 is the first of five parts in BS EN 1999. It gives generic design rules that are intended to be used with the other parts: BS EN 1999-1-2 to BS EN 1999-1-5. It applies to the design of buildings and civil engineering and structural works in aluminium. It complies with the principles and requirements for safety and serviceability of structures and the basis of their design and verification that are given in BS EN 1990 – Basis of structural design.

The other four parts of BS EN 1999-1 each address specific aluminium components, limit states or type of structures.

BS EN 1999-1-1 may also be used for design cases not covered by the Eurocodes (other structures, other actions, other materials) serving as a reference document for other CEN TC’s concerning structural matters.

What’s changed since the last update?

This version incorporates the corrigendum of March 2014 which corrects the identifiers in running headers.

NotesFollowing publication of the EN, there is a period allowed for national calibration during which the National Annex is issued, followed by a coexistence period of a maximum 3 years. During the coexistence period Member States are encouraged to adapt their national provisions. Conflicting national standards will be withdrawn by March 2010 at the latest. BS EN 1999-1-1 will partially supersede BS 8118-1:1991 and BS 8118-2:1991 which will be withdrawn by March 2010.
