What is this standard about?

Concerns over the use and abuse of CCTV prompted a UK Government code of practice and the appointment of a Surveillance Camera Commissioner to reassure the public that such systems will be used to protect and support communities rather than spy on them. This standard meets these privacy concerns and ensures that CCTV systems are used effectively, proportionately and transparently.

Who is this standard for?

It will be essential for anyone involved with detector-activated CCTV systems in the public or private sector – whether you specify, manufacture, install, maintain, monitor or buy such systems.

Why should you use this standard?

Its use is recognized by UKAS accredited inspectorates for installers and monitoring centre providers. It is also recognized by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Security Systems Policy as part of their acceptance for police response. It is the only CCTV standard that qualifies for police response via Unique Reference Number (URN), as used by professional monitoring centres across the country.

What’s changed since the last update?

The standard was revised to meet the requirements of the Government’s Code of practice and in the light of technical changes and lessons learned over the past few years, calling on best practice used in other CCTV and intruder-alarm related applications. Specifically the revised standard:

  • Gives detailed requirements for all interested parties in one document
  • Ensures that resilience and quality are maintained at all times and in all environments
  • Makes CCTV systems more affordable by removing some onerous technical requirements
  • Fills a gap in the market, linking CCTV installation standards with monitoring standards
