What is this standard about?

Recent years have seen an increasing focus on what can be done with products when users have finished with them. Policy makers worldwide are focusing on ways to reduce environmental impacts. In many countries this is leading to new incentives (e.g. legislation) to consider end-of-life processes at the design stage.

Consequently, this standard was developed to provide some initial guidance on how to include environmentally sensitive design principles in the early phase of new product development.

Who is this standard for?

It was written for product designers, design engineers and engineering designers across manufacturing industry, but specifically in the aerospace, defence and automotive sectors.

Why should you use this standard?

  • It specifies requirements for the preparation, content and structure of design output technical product documentation (TPD) for the cycles of product manufacturing, assembling, disassembling and end-of-life processing (MADE).
  • It identifies and describes methods and conventions appropriate to the preparation of documentation, in whatever form, necessary to realize a design, including the application to multiple life cycles.
  • It goes beyond specifying for product manufacture and assembly to incorporate guidance on the ultimate reusing, recovering, recycling and disposing of the components and materials used.

What’s changed since the last update?

This is a new international standard. The original British Standard (BS 8887-1:2006) on which it’s based has been tailored and adapted to suite an international audience. This international version provides a simpler process for considering sustainable design principles from the very start of the design process.
