What is this standard about? 

This first part of BS EN ISO 13849 provides guidance for the design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS), including the design of software. 

Who is this standard for?

  • Machine manufacturers and users 
  • Health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organizations, market surveillance etc.)
  • Trade unions, organizations for people with special needs
  • Service providers, e.g. maintenance contractors 

Why should you use this standard? 

This standard is one of many that cover the safety of machines. It specifically gives the most up to date guidelines to prevent failure of the safety functions.

It outlines characteristics, including the performance level required for carrying out safety functions applicable to SRP/CS for high demand and continuous mode, regardless of the type of technology and energy used (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical). 

It covers all kinds of machinery. This part of ISO 13849 also provides specific requirements for SRP/CS using programmable electronic system(s).

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 13849 has been systematically reviewed by experts to ensure its continued market relevance and contains the following updates: 

  • Deletion of the former table 1 from the introduction
  • A new sub-clause 4.5.5 as well as modifications to existing sections including significant modification of Annex C and an entirely new Annex 1
  • Updating and addition of normative references
  • Modification of the definitions of terms hazardous situation and high demand or continuous mode
  • Addition of the new term and definition of proven in use
