Non-destructive testing. Penetrant testing and magnetic particle testing. Viewing conditions

Status : Confirmed, Current   Published : December 2012

What is BS EN ISO 3059 2012?

This International Standard specifies the control of the viewing conditions for magnetic particle and penetrant testing. It includes minimum requirements for the illuminance and UV-A irradiance and their measurement. It is intended for use when the human eye is the primary detection aid.

This International Standard does not cover the use of actinic blue light sources.

Why has it been developed?
Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage.
Magnetic Particle Examination (MT): Dry or wet fluorescent magnetic particle examinations are performed on ferromagnetic materials to detect surface and slight subsurface discontinuities such as cracks, seams, laps, voids, or flaws.
Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT): Various types of liquid penetrant testing methods are utilized to detect material defects open to the surface or to detect open surface cracks. Red dye or fluorescent penetrants are utilized as well as various types of wet and dry developers. Fluorescent dye penetrant examinations are performed under black light conditions to ensure the highest detectability for very fine fatigue cracks.

Both penetrant and magnetic particle testing require controlled conditions for viewing indications, e.g.: — adequate white light to achieve reliable testing with colour contrast    techniques; Adequate UV-A irradiance with minimal light for fluorescent systems.
