What is this standard about?

This part of BS 8486 sets out minimum requirements for the examination and testing of new lifts – including service, passenger and goods lifts – before they’re put into service. This also includes hydraulically-operated devices specified in BS EN 81-2:1998.

Who is this standard for?

  • Anyone responsible for the installation and maintenance of new lifts
  • Manufacturers of service, passenger and goods lifts
  • Suppliers of components for lifts
  • Inspectors
  • Occupational health and safety managers
  • Building managers

Why should you use this standard?

BS 8486 looks at all the factors that should be taken into account when examining and testing new lifts and their components. This second part of the standard gives best-practice recommendations relating to performance testing that will help users during the installation, commissioning and maintenance of lifts and lifting equipment. Other topics include remote alarms; accessibility to lifts; anti-vandalism measures; fire safety; as well as headroom and pit clearances.

NOTE: The standard doesn’t include electric lifts relating to BS EN 81-1, or programmable electronic systems in safety related applications for lifts.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS 8486-2 has been fully revised by experts. The 2011 Amendment brings it up to date with technological developments and industry best practice.
