BS EN 13157:2004 specifies requirements for the following hand powered lifting equipment:

  • hand chain blocks
  • lever hoists
  • jaw winches
  • hand powered trolleys supporting lifting machines
  • drum winches
  • pulley blocks and deflection pulleys.

This standard covers the machinery concerned and significant hazards.

This standard does not cover hazards relating to the lifting of persons. It does not specify the additional requirements for:

  • use in ambient temperature outside the range of –10 degrees C to +50 degrees C
  • hand powered lifting equipment in direct contact with food stuffs or pharmaceuticals requiring a high level of cleanliness for hygiene reasons
  • hazards resulting from handling specific hazardous materials (e.g. explosives, hot molten masses, radiating materials)
  • hazards caused by operation in an explosive atmosphere.

NotesThis standard is the subject of transitional arrangements agreed under a European Commission mandate and is intended to lead to CE marking in support of the Machinery Directive. In order to allow for any changes in national regulations, the Commission in consultation with Member States have agreed a transition period for the co-existence of EN 13157 and corresponding national standards. Therefore at the end of this period BS 3243:1990, BS 3701:1964, BS 4018:1966, BS 4344:1968, BS 4536:1970 and BS 4898:1973 will be withdrawn.
